Please Don't Say My Name

Please Don't Say My Name is an audio documentary produced by Karen Zusman in June 2009 on the plight of Burmese refugees in Malaysia. The refugees tell the story of life in Burma-—why they had to flee-—and why their lives are still at risk in Malaysia. The story exposes a little known fact—-refugees from Burma have been rounded up by a vigilante citizen group known as the Malaysian RELA and sold to human traffickers by some members of the Malaysian Immigration Department. Sad, spirited and sometimes funny, discover how this group of friends share family--like bonds which sustain them in an absurd and cruel circumstance. Covers raids, Buddhist chants, detention camps, and interviews with trafficking victims, leading human rights activists and a UN spokesperson.

Sin Yi fled his village when the junta came to "recruit" him and his friends at gunpoint. Aye Aye Cho fled to escape rape and forced labor after her husband died and the junta came to seize their farm. </itunes:summary>

Please Don't Say My Name: Introduction - 1 of 8

 <itunes:subtitle>1 of 8 original epsiodes.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary> In 2004 I traveled to central Burma to practice meditation in one of the Buddhist monasteries. While I can't forget the tranquility and ancient beauty of the place, what I encountered after I left the monastery still haunts me: young girls stooped over shovels in scorching heat, boys armed with rifles as big as themselves. In 2007 I was one of few Westerners inside Burma in the immediate aftermath of the monk-led protests. People wanted to tell me their stories—but it was dangerous for them to be seen with me. I flew to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to interview recent Burmese refugees and that's when I learned about the life waiting for them in Malaysia—in many cases, the circumstances are as tragic as those from which they had just fled in Burma. </itunes:summary>
