Evelyn and I watched him turn the corner and then heard a strange animal sound. What's wrong with that goat? The animal was laying in the dirt just on the other side of the road. I thought it was deformed and couldn't walk.

But then I realized what I was looking at—the goat was giving birth. Just a little nose sticking out but then as we watched the head followed. A group of approaching goats bleeted their encouragement and strolled on past.

A man appeared in a doorway, glanced at us and then at the goat. He didn't react.

The goat stood up and tried to walk as the kid pushed its way out further. The kid's front legs dangled as the mother walked. Now the man in the doorway reacted, chasing the mother, catching hold of the kid and giving it a good yank. But it slipped away. A second man appeared and was able to get a good hold on the kid and pull it the rest of the way out.

The first man grabbed the mother while the second man scooped up the kid out of the dirt and afterbirth. The kid was then placed in front of the mother so that the mother could lick it clean.

At that moment our driver returned with the gas. In the five minutes he'd been gone, we'd watched an entire birthing. We thanked him for his timing.

"Pilgrims are persons in motion - passing through territories not their own - seeking something we might call completion, or perhaps the word clarity will do as well, a goal to which only the spirit's compass points the way."
