Tiantan, the Temple of Heaven, is one of my favorite sites in Beijing. Construction started under the Ming Emperor Yongle, and was completed in 1420 just before his death. It signified the sacred joining of Heaven and Earth, the emperor, of course, the intermediary of the two as the "Son of Heaven." Each winter solstice, the Emperor would pray here for the coming year's harvests. | ||||||||
