Haibao Ta, built in the 5th century, remains a Buddhist place of worship in the predominantly Muslim populated province of Ningxia. Arriving in the late afternoon, we were invited to dine with the monks on the premises. They kindly seated us and served cold rice porridge with mantou (steamed white buns). Trying hard not to think about the flies swarming the mantou, we concentrated on conversation. Surprisingly, we never got sick. | ||||||||
