North of Dac Lac province, Gia Lai Kon Tum province makes up the other half of the Central Highlands. The town of Kon Tum - north of Plei Ku (the provincial capital) - was where the run ended. To continue north from Kon Tum, one had to travel back to Plei Ku and then some 200km east to the coast.

The town is peopled by ethnic minorities - mainly Bahnar, Sedang and Jarai. In total, some 27 ethnic minorities are found throughout Gia Lai Kon Tum province.
